Wildcard Berths for the USDSA National Championships

In 2026, the USDSA Selection Committee will be able to award up to 9 wildcard berths to the National Championship. Wildcard spots are reserved for teams that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the sport and to the mission of drone soccer — even if they didn't secure an automatic qualifying position through their district. The Committee evaluates each eligible team holistically, weighing the following factors:*

1. Performance at District Championships

A team's finish in the official district championship rankings is the primary measure of competitive readiness. Teams that placed competitively — even just outside an automatic bid — are strong wildcard candidates.

2. Season Participation

Consistent participation throughout the season demonstrates dedication to the program. The Committee looks favorably on teams that competed in multiple sanctioned events and engaged with the full USDSA competition calendar.

3. Fostering District Growth

Teams and programs that have actively helped grow drone soccer in their region — by recruiting new schools, supporting newer teams, or expanding access — reflect the values at the heart of USDSA's mission.

4. Competitive Spirit and Quality of Play

Beyond rankings, the Committee considers how a team competed: their sportsmanship, energy, coachability, and the overall quality of play they brought to the field across the season.

5. Prior National Championship Podium Finishes

Teams with a history of podium performances at the National Championship have demonstrated they can compete at the highest level. This track record is considered as evidence of sustained program excellence.

6. District Representation and Organizational Engagement

The Committee also considers broader representation and organizational health, including:

  • Whether the team's district would otherwise go unrepresented at Nationals.

  • Whether district and team leadership are active participants in the USDSA community — attending meetings, communicating with the national office, and supporting the organization's growth

*Selection criteria are subject to change, and are at the discretion of the USDSA.
